WHY THIS PROGRAMME?

Human Resource Development (HRD) has been one of the most neglected areas in Indian textile and clothing industry.  The syllabus / curriculum in the educational institutions, barring some new fashion technology institutes, has not kept pace with the changing requirements.  The personnel form such institutes, after joining the industry, are not exposed to the latest and emerging concepts with respect to technology, market and management.  With the integration of markets and application of IT on wider scale, there has been a sea-change in the way the businesses are conducted today.  The industry needs to update itself with such changing requirements.  One of the ways of meeting this task is to equip the personnel working in the industry with skills and knowledge of the latest.  While there are some institutions addressing this need of the industry, there has been no organized, focused and co-coordinated plan of action.   This National Programme is therefore conceived to fill this gap.  Visual Merchandising (VM) is one of the 22 subjects identified for training under the National Programme.

Visual Merchandising (VM) is the art of presentation, which puts the merchandise in focus.  It educates the customers, creates desire and finally augments the selling process. This is an area where the Indian textile and clothing industry, particularly, the SMEs lack adequate knowledge and expertise.  This inadequacy is best reflected in poor presentation/display and communication in various national and international exhibitions.  Therefore this Programme has been conceived to fill this gap.

VM helps in:

STATUS OF VM IN INDIA:

Unlike the western countries, where VM receives highest priority in commercial planning of a product, the Indian industry’s understanding and practice of the concept of VM is inadequate.  With phasing out of quantitative restrictions after the year 2004, the textile industry will have to compete purely on the competitive edge of the products and VM will be a helpful tool in projecting the uniqueness of the products and thereby increasing the market access and sales.  It is high time that the Indian textile and clothing industry, therefore, understands and adopts the scientific and  professional system of VM rather than the traditional practices of display of products and communication.

OBJECTIVES OF THE TRAINING:

In the above context, the objectives of this training programme are:
