Important features and developments during the month of July, August & September, 2005 :

1) Textiles Committee in association with the ‘International textiles Machinery Association (ITMA)’ has conducted a series of road shows in different parts of the country as a curtain raiser for the mega international showcase – the 2nd Asian International exhibition of Textile Machinery, ITMA ASIA which was held in Singapore from the 17th to 21st October 2005 . The objective of the event was to bring Textile business houses and entrepreneurs on a common platform and sensitize them about the availability of newer technologies. It was envisaged that such initiative would acts as a catalyst to the industry representatives to visit the exhibition and make use the opportunity to go for modernization programme by availing TUF scheme – An initiative of the Indian government to make the industry globally competitive.

The road show had started from 19th July 2005 and ended on 27th July 2005 and was held in all the major Textile centers such as Coimbatore, Tirupur, Erode, Madurai, Mumbai, Ahemedabad and  Surat.  The road show was a great success at all the centers and has collectively attracted more than 1000 participants from the industry.

The event  was supported by Orbit Tours who has presented their tour packages for visiting the ITMA ASIA exhibition at Singapore.

1) First Indian textile company obtains certification under Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series (OHASAS 18001) with the consultancy support of Textiles Committee

M/s. Summer India Textiles Pvt. Ltd. at Tiruchengode in Tamilnadu, became the first Indian textile company, to have been certified under Occupational Health and Safety standard (OHASAS 18001) in the country.  The Textiles Committee has provided consultancy and guided the unit in achieving this certification.

OHASAS 18001, which came into existence in the year 1999, is an independent, voluntary and verifiable standard (modelled on ISO 9000/ISO 14000 standards) aimed at ensuring the development and implementation of systems for ensuring occupational health and safety at the workplace.  By implementing this system/standard, the manufacturing company would demonstrate its commitment towards the occupational health and safety issues which would result in not only better working environment leading to improved productivity but also compliance to national statutes and international market requirements.

With the phasing out of quotas from 1st January 2005, the ability of Indian exporters to various voluntary international standards, including occupational health and safety would influence the market access, to a significant extent.  In fact, existence of these independent standards at a manufacturing place is one of the criterion being used by the foreign buyers for selection of vendors.  Therefore, implementation of this standard coupled with other standards such as ISO 9000 Quality Management Systems, ISO 14000 Environmental Management Systems would greatly enhance the capability of Indian textile manufacturer/exporter to access the international markets in a more effective manner.

Realizing the importance of facilitating the Indian industry in meeting these standards, the Textiles Committee has launched the consultancy of OHASAS 18001 during the year 2001.  During this short span of two years, 8 textile companies are using the services of the Committee in implementation of this OHASAS standard.  In addition, 220 companies have availed of the consultancy services of the Textiles Committee in implementation of standards related to quality (ISO 9000), environment (ISO 14000) and social responsibility (SA 8000).

Gaining inspiratiCon from the Summer India Textiles Mills an integrated system for ISO –9000, ISO-14000 & SA-8000 is picking up very fast in South Indian textile clusters mainly because of insistence of foreign buyers. The integrated management systems are proved to be a powerful tool for market access and better business opportunities.

In order to have effective cost reduction techniques available in the developed countries Textiles Committee has taken initiative of bringing the NMCP consultants to India. Idea of bringing them for consultancy is to share the expenditure among interested companies and avail the benefits, which will help in cost reduction and process optimization.
